The Find

The Find What if the whole of life is actually one big scavenger hunt? Imagine it! I’ve been amazed at all the searching and finding one must do in this life. When you think about it, our God IS a mysterious god? Let’s just consider the very language of the scriptures and see there  the pattern that causes us to realize this is true? Let’s see…I will just start with the basics. Seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. Search for wisdom as though…

To Hymn We Sing & Dance

I love the worship sets we do on Sundays that draw me into intimate adoration and gratefulness. Instrumentation meets soulful worship leader on stage, and we have this dark moment to step into the light and breathe in the Spirit invited among us. It is a call to worship Him with abandonment. In the past thirty years, having been a worship leader’s wife for most of that,  discussions surrounding God’s Sunday morning music were often focused on the generational conflicts of style and preference. There seemed to be this quick…

Last Dance

My Daddy died yesterday. Unexpectedly- but not without warning. He had just been over last week to have dinner with me and my kiddos. I was trying my culinary hand at boneless buffalo strips, (kinda thinkin’ I could bring the same flavor as bone-in wings) ah but  you can’t! You must have all the flavor-makin’ marrow to bring the “finger-lickin’good!” Anyway, he came over like he always did when he could and he hung out with me in the kitchen while I cooked and talked. He told his stories; asked about the kids,…

Commonplace & Miraculous

As Senator Blunt spoke the words, “commonplace and miraculous,” yesterday in his opening remarks for the presidential inauguration,  I was drawn to the birth of Christ and to His entire ministry and representations of God for us. I was reminded that we ought to be encouraged ( those of us who are commonplace who call on the name of Christ) for Jesus, time and time again, reaches from the commonplace and makes it miraculous. It made me consider how much striving for bigger and better and best we do creating…

Dating Old Men: Tozer on Prayer

This week was our school’s annual Veteran’s Day chapel. I sat and listened to our speaker’s address, former warrior being honored and to honor those veterans seated in front of him. He gave a strong testimony of how his little 14-year old sister had given him a New Testament just before he went into the military which he carried on every mission as well as still held in his shirt pocket this day while he spoke, reaching for it and showing us it was still there. He told story after…

Assuming Corpse Pose

Yoga is different than any other thing I have ever done.  It requires me to zero in on just the thing I am there to do- nothing else can distract. It starts by making us leave our worldly distractions at the door-phone, purse, everything else we brought in with us stays in the locker room, and we are only allowed to bring in what’s necessary for the class: our towel, mat, & water bottle. We even shed our shoes! Barefoot! One of my fave new things in life is to…

Not One Righteous…Know Thyself

Christ tried to prepare us for it with scriptures that warn us “Judge not, lest you be judged. It is one of the simplest directives in the Bible, yet one of the hardest to follow. Why? Because out of our personal wounds come our cry for justice. Our focus becomes retaliatory needing to relieve pressure on the heart and mind for having been wronged. This is brokenness exposed.  We can’t be confused; there is a biblical standard, and we as the church must address it when dealing with sin. I…

Big Deep Breaths

Big Deep Breaths I can’t remember life before I had to take them all the time. Trying to get to the top of a breath throughout the day is such an interruption in productivity. Something so innate and thoughtless becomes a necessary focus and all of a sudden priorities get pushed aside for breathing. I actually have to stop whatever I am doing and focus on trying to breathe. I hate it. But, it reminds me that I am not in control, and there are certain times in life when…

Not One Righteous…The Call to Remain

Why do we ever think that anyone is truly above reproach in all things? Ecclesiastes 7:20 says “Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.” I have been amazed through the years as a principal of the parent who will claim that their child is not capable of lying or hitting or of dropping the “F” bomb in a heated moment. Not one righteous means… NOT ONE! We all have intense fears of being found out, of others knowing…

Grief: It’s Not for Lily Tappers

Sometimes it hits when I least expect it. I am fine. Then I am crying. Then I am fine again. No matter how long it lasts, I am ten times more tired when it is over than I was before it hit. I have learned to let it pass through me, lest it undo me. I don’t even apologize anymore. I just carry a kleenex in my hand. We went white water rafting in Colorado this summer for vacation. The guide was specific in his instructions telling and demonstrating exactly how…
